Surrounded by water on three sides, jutting out into island studded Casco Bay, Portland, and the surrounding communities of Kennebunkport and Freeport, offer some of the best views of the islands, historic forts, and lighthouses in Maine. You can schedule a day of non-stop activities or kick back and relax. You’ll find everything all in close proximity of vibrant, historic Portland on Casco Bay.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for our new state-of-the-art passenger terminal “Ocean Gateway” were held on October 2005. Featuring 3,000 linear feet of deep water berthing and a 21,000 square foot “state of the art” terminal, will enable the largest of cruise ships to make Portland, Maine their regular port of choice. The new facilities, designed for both International Ferry and Cruise passengers, will have full screening capabilities for homeport and port of call operations and is expected to be completed by late fall 2007.
The new facility will be located just steps away from Portland’s dynamic downtown and within walking distance to the Old Port shopping district and uptown Historic and Art’s districts. This one port offers four dynamic destinations. In addition to historic Portland, 30 minutes south of Portland, passengers will enjoy Kennebunkport, a quintessential Maine village and summer home to two US presidents. Freeport with its factory outlets and boutiques is home to the world famous outdoor outfitter LL Bean and is just 20 minutes north of Portland. New Hampshire is home of the White Mountain National Forest and the Mount Washington Cog Railway - a unique and unforgettable experience of a lifetime.
We look forward to seeing you in Maine!
Discover Portland & Beyond’s mission is to promote the Port of Portland and our shore excursion destinations as a “must see” port of call for cruise lines. We strive to provide assistance to the travel trade, travel media, cruise lines, and passengers. Additionally, Discover Portland & Beyond will work to educate out constituents locally who are affected by visiting cruise ships, and to prepare them for the needs of the cruise industry and their passengers.
